Happy Birthday, HHD! Five Years of Haven Homes of Detroit

Updated: Mar 14

Five years ago, Haven Homes of Detroit was just an idea.

An idea rooted in the belief that women leaving trafficking deserve safe housing, real support, and a place where healing can begin.

This month we are celebrating five years of HHD. Like many meaningful things in life, it somehow feels like it all happened yesterday and also like we have lived a lifetime in these years.

In five years we have purchased and renovated two Detroit homes. We have built an incredible staff team. And during the almost three years our homes have been open, we have welcomed nearly twenty women into our program. Along the way we have celebrated three graduates and many other milestones that reflect the courage and determination of the women who walk through our doors.

But the numbers only tell a small part of the story. What has shaped us most are the ways we have grown.

Over the past five years we have been stretched in ways we did not expect. We have wrestled with our own privilege and gained a deeper understanding of how important real social support and community are for women rebuilding their lives.

We have learned what it truly means to be trauma informed. We have built relationships with survivor leaders who have changed us forever. Their wisdom, courage, and leadership continue to shape how we serve.

We have also walked alongside women through pain, grief, and loss that they never should have had to carry. We have heard stories of exploitation and abuse that stay with us long after the conversation ends.

And yet, even in the midst of those realities, we have also seen something remarkable.

We have seen hope spark.

Sometimes quietly. Sometimes slowly. But real hope as women begin rebuilding their lives and working through trauma that most of us can barely imagine.

We have watched women take steps toward stability. Opening bank accounts. Rebuilding credit. Pursuing education. Securing employment. Reclaiming their independence.

We have also built something important as an organization. A diverse and thoughtful board now helps guide this work. We have leaned into organizational excellence, even when it has been challenging, because survivors deserve services that are not just compassionate but also excellent.

And along the way we have met some of the most incredible partners working to make Detroit and the world better.

The days can feel long. But the years feel short.

Five years in, we are more convinced than ever that places like Haven Homes of Detroit need to exist. Safe housing matters. Trauma informed support matters. Community matters.

And while we are grateful for everything that has happened over these first five years, we know there is still so much more to do.

We can't wait to see what the next 5 years bring for survivors and our organization.
